How to Add Running Headers, Footers & Dynamic Page Counts to PDFs

Whether preparing annual corporate reports, academic manuscripts, or formal proposals, professional documents require clear running headers, revision dates, and standardized “Page X of Y” footers.

The Anatomy of a Professional PDF Header and Footer

A standard document runner is divided into six strategic zones across top and bottom page margins:

Top Header Zones

  • Top Left: Document / Project Title (e.g., “Q3 Strategic Review”)
  • Top Center: Organization or Company Name
  • Top Right: Classification / Status (e.g., “CONFIDENTIAL”)

Bottom Footer Zones

  • Bottom Left: Legal Copyright / Trademark statement
  • Bottom Center: Export / Revision Date
  • Bottom Right: Dynamic Page Numbers (“Page {page} of {total}”)

Dynamic Placeholder Tags

With A2Z PDF Header & Footer Builder, you do not need to manually type numbers on every page. You can use dynamic template variables:

  • {page} — Automatically inserts the current page number.
  • {total} — Automatically inserts the total page count of the PDF document.
  • {date} — Automatically stamps today's formatted ISO date.

Example: Entering Page {page} of {total}on a 50-page document will automatically render “Page 1 of 50”, “Page 2 of 50”, and so on.

Step-by-Step Tutorial

  1. Open A2Z PDF Header & Footer Tool.
  2. Upload your multi-page PDF document.
  3. Type your text or dynamic tags into the desired 6 zones (Top Left, Center, Right, Bottom Left, Center, Right).
  4. Toggle “Skip Cover Page” if you do not want headers or page counts stamped over your title page.
  5. Click “Apply Headers & Footers” and download your branded document.
